NOMATIC Travel Bag Review | 40L Carry-On Backpack (Indiegogo & Kickstarter Crowdfunded)

NOMATIC is known for their extremely successful crowdfunding campaigns, where they create innovative and unique travel gear. Designed as “the most functional travel bag ever”, the Travel Bag raised a massive $5m on Kickstarter and Indiegogo combined. It’s maximum legal carry on compatible and comes with lots of unique features that you’ve probably never seen before.

But will those features actually prove to be functional on the road? We took the NOMATIC Travel Bag around Detroit, LA, Joshua Tree, New York and Minneapolis for testing and to find out just how practical these unique features really are.

Not to be confused with their “Travel Pack,” The NOMATIC Travel Bag looks like a giant box on your back—because that’s basically what it is.

This bag comes with a lot of promises and a lot of unique features. We made sure to use the bag enough to really test those features out and discover if they’re actually functional in practice. While we did find many of them useful—namely the organizational elements, the water bottle pocket, the shoe compartment and the laundry bag—there are a couple that didn’t really work as well as you might think. There are areas of this design (such as the duffel strap system) that end up awkward and clunky, making us feel like more thought could have gone into it.

Overall, the NOMATIC Travel Bag uses some high-quality materials, a few novel features and has obviously had a lot of research and innovation put into it. However, the hit and miss experience of the features mean the bag seems greater in concept than it actually performs in practice.

Top Secret?

Love your reviews. Just wanted to let you know your recent videos have been somewhat over-exposed. Not sure if that’s a look you’re going for, but seems odd.

What do you think of the NOMATIC Travel Bag?

Garrett Bredell says:

This is the kind of bag that has incredible potential in its Version 2.0. When I went on the great “shoppening”, I liked this bag a lot but it had some serious issues. 1) No respiration at all for the back. If I was less sweaty this wouldn’t be an issue but I know my flaws. 2) The duffel bag mechanic is – I hate to say it – a gimmick. 3) As you point out, a whole surface is practically water absorbent, and I don’t *think* they use YKK Zippers. For a bag with these features that’s pretty important to me.

Ready Eddie says:

Bought this travel bag yesterday. Looking forward to using it. Thank you for the review.

Hey man!!! will you do the Akra Arcido Bag? Much apprecciated, I love your contents!

Iron Backpacker says:

Thanks Pack Hacker; honestly said; Nomatic has a lot of customer complains for months right now about broken zippers and material, water resistance and customer problems for delivery/exchange; I would keep everybody open your eyes and look what’s going on at Instagram and Facebook…the best time of Nomatic is over for now but could be better!!…like it was in there first three years!

Global Adventurer says:

Tom, by the way….Thank you very much for this review. I definitely love the boxy style, but a little too busy. Sometimes, less is more. However, I definitely love that dirty clothes hamper! Now I need to find one exactly like that to purchase separately. That is awesome if I have to say so myself:D. Thanks again!

I was wondering if you could weigh this bag and all bags you review going forward? Weight is an important consideration with carry on limits and manufacturers sometimes are not truthful, or in this case don’t list it on their website. Thanks!
